Journals From A 2003 Thru-Hike of the Appalachian Trail (by Loony)

Entry #27 – April 18, 2003

Had a hard time getting to sleep last night. Andy was hopped up on sugar from all the Peeps and I had an aching stomach from the buffet.

Got up around 7 and headed out to the store & post office around 9:30. Shank was down there waiting for his package – hope it came, but I don’t think it did, or he’d be here tonight. Left Fontana Dam around 11:30. Had fun walking across the Dam and then ran into a ridge runner taking a survey when we entered the park. About a half hour in we ran into a big king snake – black w/white belly. It was probably over a yard long. Really cool! Had a pretty good hike in – the sky was overcast for much of the day, so it wasn’t OVERLY hot. We had a good surprise when we got to Shuckstack Mtn – Jersey, Footslogger & Blaze (Jonathan) were there breaking. Now we’re all at the Mollie’s Ridge Shelter along w/Jane, Mello Yello & a few others. We’re ready to roast some marshmallows now that Jersey & Footslogger brought. (Arggh – a mouse is running around here in the shelter. 😛 These Smoky Mtn shelters have chain link fences across the front to protect from bears – pretty dank & dingy!)
