Journals From A 2003 Thru-Hike of the Appalachian Trail (by Loony)
Entry #28 – April 19, 2003
8:50 – Quite a long day today. Mileage was only supposed to be 10.5 or so, but seemed like forever. We did cross some neat spots today. Spence Field had some nice bald areas w/out any cover. There were more balds up towards Rocky Top, along with some fabulous views. The weather was great – clear skies. It does make for hot hiking, though. We must have been 7 or 8 miles in when I thought I was done for – felt like I would never make it the whole way. Not enough energy, which was odd since we actually made a hot lunch today for the first time. Tomorrow we have quite a haul – 13 miles, and the first 10 are to reach the top of Clingman’s Dome – the highest point on the AT @ 6,643 feet. I hope we can make it the whole way!
Got into Derrick Knob today around 5:30. Too many people, so we’re tenting. Mello Yello, Jane, Footslogger, Jersey, Easy E and Rumbler are here, along w/a few other thru-hikers & a family.
There are deer wandering around outside the tent now, and the owls are hooting it up. Just so no bears come to visit!
