Journals From A 2003 Thru-Hike of the Appalachian Trail (by Loony)
Entry #44 – May 8, 2003
8:10 PM – Escaped from town courtesy of Herb & his big white Suburban and hit the trail around 9 AM. Started out feeling like we had never hiked before, as usual – our packs had gained a few pounds in town. Us too, probably. Day went pretty well, but turned pretty long. Saw a couple of nice waterfalls, including Jones Falls and Mountaineer Falls. Ran into a trail relocation that added about 2 miles. Seemed like we’d never make it to the shelter, but eventually did around 5 PM. There are quite a few here, most of whom we don’t know. Our group of familiar faces has scattered, but hope to meet back up with some people @ Trail Days.
Had a good day in town yesterday, too. Had breakfast, ice cream @ Sam Dee’s, immediately followed by McDonald’s cheeseburgers. Topped the night off with 2 medium pepperoni pizzas, both of which were gone by morning. Back to Trail food today, and missing the ice cream.
Hoping to get to Damascus on Monday (tomorrow’s Thursday). Somehow, the weather today was beautiful. Hopefully it holds out for the night.
