Journals From A 2003 Thru-Hike of the Appalachian Trail (by Loony)

Entry #50 – May 18, 2003

7:40 PM – Finally made it out of Damascus today – Trail Days is behind us at last.
Thursday we hiked just a few miles to the highway. So, overthe 3 days since we first left town, we only hiked a total of 17 miles. Pretty lame considering we had wanted to get possibly 45 miles up, but oh well. We had a couple of nice nights by the river.

There wasn’t much traffic at the highway and we started to wonder if we’d be able to get a ride. After 15-20 minutes, though, a truck pulled over. He was a thru-hiker from last year, around our age – Trail name: MacGyver. He gave us a ride all the way back to Damascus, as that’s where he was headed (for Trail Days). It was fun to hear a bit about his trip along the way and I looked at some of his pictures. Before we knew it, we were back in town.
