Journals From A 2003 Thru-Hike of the Appalachian Trail (by Loony)
Entry #57 – May 25, 2003
9:45 PM – 25 miles today – surprised we did it, kind of! The hiking was pretty easy, so we were glad. Started out around 8:30, and somewhere around 1:00, we hit the road that goes into town. We weren’t planning on it, really, but had entertained the idea of getting more food. As luck would have it, while we were standing at the road looking at the map, a guy in a truck pulled up & asked if we wanted a ride into Bland. Said he’d give us a ride back, too, since he was only going to be in for an hour or so. We decided to go, and bought some goodies at the grocery store. Ate a pint of ice cream and bananas. Picked up a huge box of oatmeal cream pies and a can of cheese balls, so we can pig out the next couple days hiking. We never seem to have enough food to be able to snack properly.
Got into the shelter – Jenny Knob – just as the rain started. It’s full, so we got the tent set up. Ate late – around 9:00 – before getting inside.
Hoping everything is going well at home. Called my mom & dad today, and my dad’s going in for surgery on Wednesday. Funny how stupid you can feel about all the complaining you did about insignificant things one day, and the next you’re just glad you’re here, and hoping everything works out for the best.
So they won’t be meeting us in Troutville on the 2nd, but hopefully they’ll be out later in the summer. We’ll still push to get to Pearisburg, since we’re ready for a hotel (over a week now since we left Damascus – laundry, etc.), but after that, who knows.
-Oh, and guess what we did tonight – hung our food bag in the shelter – oh well!
