Journals From A 2003 Thru-Hike of the Appalachian Trail (by Loony)

Entry #61 – May 30, 2003

Terrible sleep last night. woke around 2 or 3 AM with a full bladder. Unfortunately, the shelter was also quite full, so I didn’t really want to try to pick my way out into the dark and misty night.

Probably an hour passed and I couldn’t stand it anymore, so got up & went outside.

Back in, the other thing keeping me awake was a mouse that kept visiting my pack, which was hanging behind my head. Andy was up, too, and he kept shining his light. We saw it run, but it came back again later! Not sure what it was doing, since there was no food in my pack and nothing was chewed up.

Was finally snug in my bag again around 4 AM when the snoring started up. Maybe I should pick up some earplugs next time in town.

The hiking today was pretty uneventful. Weren’t looking forward to starting out, even – the weather was so cold & foggy. Had long ridgewalks mostly, without views. Sky cleared up a bit for the afternoon, though. Finally, a day without rain! I hear it coming in for the weekend, though.

Sleeping in Bailey Gap Shelter tonight with DoubleDare, Turtle and Loser. Some church group came in this evening while I was in the privy. They walked by to go tent up on the hill and pulled the door open on me! Not very churchlike. >:|

Probably another pretty short day tomorrow – heavy packs and aching bones.
