Journals From A 2003 Thru-Hike of the Appalachian Trail (by Loony)

Entry #81 – June 24, 2003

9:10 PM – Tenting at a river about 3 miles past Rock Hollow Shelter. Gazelle, Hopeful and 2 others are here. We were kind of glad to see someone else show up, cause we’re next to a dirt road, though there hasn’t been anyone on it. The day was pretty boring for hiking. Really hot again, but nice to have clear skies. Stopped for our first break @ Dick’s Dome Shelter mainly to use the privy. We were happy to find a couple of beers in the stream (left over from Mothman, I think), so we were glad we had stopped. Started the “roller coaster” today. It’s a section with 10 consecutive good climbs & descents in 13.5 miles. No more than 500 feet, though. Got through 2 today – 8 more for tomorrow!

Yesterday when we got to camp, we took showers with our water bag & hose attachment. Naked in the woods, ha HA! It was good to wash up (even our hair), but feeling very grungy after today. Can’t wait to get to Harper’s Ferry & a hotel room.
