Journals From A 2003 Thru-Hike of the Appalachian Trail (by Loony)
Entry #99 – July 18, 2003
7:20 PM – Passed some nice scenery here in NJ today. Some of the areas even reminded me of our last trip to Isle Royale. Rock ridges with moss & pines & tons of blueberries. Only did 14 miles today, to the Brink Road Shelter. There’s supposed to be high bear activity here, same as all the NJ shelters. There are big metal bear boxes to keep our food in which is a good idea. It’d be cool if they had them along the whole trail, I think.
It rained a bit off and on through the day, but nothing more than sprinkles, really. Just after we went down to get water from the spring and then came up to make dinner, the thunder started. Began raining more & more as we ate, and then the lighting started. I don’t think it’s ground to cloud or whatever, but I started freaking, because I hate lighting. I jump & shudder at every flash. Couldn’t handle it anymore, so I am in the tent now. Andy was nice enough to bring the food down and clean up. The sky’s still flashing through the tent walls. Don’t think it will storm too bad though as the sky’s not too dark. Just a passing summer rumbler – I hope.
Exciting news, though. My mom & dad are out east at this very moment. Should be at my dad’s aunt’s in MD tonight! I think the plan is to meet up with them on Tuesday. We’re going to have a great time, I’m sure. Might even take a drive to where we used to live in NY – Westbrookville, near Middletown.
Even though it’s Friday already, Tuesday seems like forever away. We are filthy – haven’t done laundry since Pine Grove, and we are coated with sweat and DEET. The mosquitos here are UNBEARABLE without the DEET. As soon as we got to our tent site here, we could hear the swarms buzzing. Had to whip our packs off right away and get the bug spray out. The bugs were coating our arms and legs. Ahhhh!
Oh, When Andy went down to bring the food just now, a guy said he saw a bear & 3 cubs right at the top of the hill! I hope they stay away…
