Journals From A 2003 Thru-Hike of the Appalachian Trail (by Loony)
Entry #101 – July 24, 2003
9:25 PM – It’s been forever since I wrote, and I don’t think I have the energy to go over every detail.
We did end up getting up for the sunrise Sunday morning. It was beautiful. Left camp @ 7:00 AM & headed to High Point State Park In NJ. Got the runaround there. First missed the side trail to the monument so we had to backtrack. Got up there and found no food like we’d hoped – only a pop machine. Decided to go down to the beach area & to the concession stand there & found it hadn’t opened yet. Left at 11, after wasting a couple of hours for no good reason. Hiked on & stopped by the “Secret Shelter.” It’s a neat little shed on a guy’s property for thru-hikers. There’s a tub to wash clothes, a dryer and a hot shower. All for free. We took advantage but then went on to Unionville. Stopped in at the local bar for pizza & ended up spending the rest of the evening there with Indiana Slim, Trpopo & Trevor. Had a good time & drank our fill of beer. Slept in the gazebo @ the little park (after getting permission or whatever). It was the next day that was really fun – but, too tired for now & want to join the snorers, so more tomorrow.
As for today, a pretty uneventful hike. Some nice views and a homemade ice cream stand. Yum! Tenting @ Wildcat Shelter with a zillion others.
