Journals From A 2003 Thru-Hike of the Appalachian Trail (by Loony)

Entry #105 – July 29, 2003

8:45 PM – Late start again, but still had a pretty big day – 18 miles. OK day of hiking with some nice smooth trails. Lots of rocks, though, too. Yesterday & today we’ve passed by more old stone walls & foundations than I’ve ever seen along the whole trail. In some areas you look around to see entire grids of walls laid out through the forest.

6 miles into the day was a good break for lunch – a deli/market .4 miles from the trail. Had pizza & beer. Of course, the main reason we went in was to pickup some groceries to get us to Kent. Passed by a nice lake late in the day – “Nuclear Lake.” Guess they used to do nuclear testing somewhere around there, but it seems very healthy & is very pretty. Some people have taken a dip but it was too late for us.

At the Telephone Pioneers Shelter tonight with just Ace again. We seem to have hit a lull in the mad rush of hikers. Took a nosedive on the way to the privy – that’s about the most exciting thing I have to say about this place.

746 miles to go. 🙂
