Journals From A 2003 Thru-Hike of the Appalachian Trail (by Loony)
Entry #108 – August 1, 2003
7:00 PM – The first day of August – 2 more months out here at the most. I’d think!
What a lazy day. We started out this morning not really sure how far we were headed. Took a lunch break after 6 miles or so at the shelter. Now we know where the mob has gone – 2 days ahead of us there were 20 separate entries in the shelter register! We only saw 4 other people on the trail today that are headed north – Elf, Jimmy, Doc, Llama and Coy (their dog). Left our lunch break and decided we’d stop after 3 miles at the next campsite for water. It rained on and off through the day, but not too much.
Made it to Silver Hill Campsite for water & found picnic tables, a pavilion & a privy. Doc, Llama & Coy showed up soon after. We chatted & sat around. They left after awhile, but we decided that it was such a nice place that we’d just stay! A short day, but oh well. Plus, definitely were glad when it started pouring and we were under this nice shelter! We’ve lounged around all afternoon. Did crosswords, Andy caught up on his journal and I wrote a letter to Elle & Jesse (Niece & Nephew). You wouldn’t believe how much I’d give to be sitting @ Chuck E. Cheese right now, playing games & eating pizza!
Well, one guy just showed up – I think his name is Jack on the Mountain – an older gentleman. I was wondering why he looked so confused as we talked to him, but then he put his hearing aid in. 18 miles tomorrow…
