Journals From A 2003 Thru-Hike of the Appalachian Trail (by Loony)

Entry #113 – August 8, 2003

7:30 PM – Had a pretty good stay @ the cabin last night. The thing that bugs me is how everyone goes to sleep so early. By the time I went upstairs to my bunk it was pitch black & everyone was quiet – at 9:00. Of course, I did wake a couple times to hear Krazy K talking in his sleep. Something like “See you up the trail” and “This is sweet!” Seriously.

Pancakes in the morning and then we left around 8. Was a pretty good day of hiking – my mood has definitely lifted quite a bit. The terrain has been pretty crappy lately, though. Tons of boggy, swampy junk and millions of mosquitoes. We hiked pretty fast early in the day, thinking it might storm later on, but it actually turned out to be a pretty nice day. We’ll be into Dalton tomorrow to get a mail drop and resupply.

Seems like quite a few people have gotten off the trail lately. Also, I don’t think there are many this far who haven’t skipped sections, either. Right now we’re wondering about Loser. Haven’t seen him forever. We know he took a break, but also heard he had to get off because he hurt his ankle. Hopefully he didn’t quit.

At the Kay Wood Shelter tonight with Green Turtle, Krazy K, Teflon, Slug, Hot Rod and a section hiker.
