Journals From A 2003 Thru-Hike of the Appalachian Trail (by Loony)

Entry #122 – August 18, 2003

5:40 PM – Another awesome day, believe it or not!?! Maybe it’s the light at the end of the tunnel that’s pulling my spirits up. Probably it’s just the fabulous weather, though.

Got a 7:30 start under blue skies from Greenwall. It was only a mile and a half to the road into Wallingford. We got there & there was no traffic, so we were worried! But after only a couple of minutes a truck came along & picked us up. Very lucky! Went to the PO for our maildrop, picked up a couple supplies & ate lunch at a restaurant in town. Unfortunately, the library was closed, so we didn’t think we’d be able to check our e-mail. But, went to the town hall & the clerk let us use hers! Very nice. On the way out of town we got a ride from Mrs. Gorp. Apparently she started the trail a day before us – March 29 – but had to get off because of ankle problems.

After that it was an easy hike to Clarendon River Gorge where we found Trail magic! Beer & pop & snacks. The best part was the guys who left it came back while we were still there to clean it up & made us take the rest! So now we’re at Clarendon Shelter with a couple of beers. Doesn’t get much better!

A big climb up Killington Mtn tomorrow…
