Journals From A 2003 Thru-Hike of the Appalachian Trail (by Loony)

Entry #124 – August 20, 2003

Well, we decided to do the miles & get to Hanover by Friday. We headed out pretty early. Just about a mile down the trail, before Woods State Park, I slipped on a rock and went down at full force. I whacked the knee I hurt the other day and I just laid there on the ground, howling in pain! Andy turned & came to help me, but I couldn’t even get up right away even with him helping. The pain subsided after a bit and I washed it up. Got a bit of a gash and a stiff knee. It was hurting when I walked and so we stopped @ the State Park office for a break & cold pop. At that point we were wondering if we should change our minds & go into town. It’d still be easy to get a ride. Decided to go on & make up some good time & miles.

After I got walking, my knee loosened up & was doing ok. It was a pretty tough hike today though. Nothing too major, but a lot of climbs, it seemed. Some pretty steep. We’re tenting again at Wintturi Shelter. The weather’s still nice, but rain by Friday I think.

Less than 500 miles left, now. 470 or so. It’s tough knowing that we have the most difficult sections yet to come! But they’re also the most beautiful. I pray for good weather!
