Journals From A 2003 Thru-Hike of the Appalachian Trail (by Loony)

Entry #128 – August 27, 2003

8:50 PM – A pretty easy hike today, with some more decent weather. Had Trail Magic @ one of the roads. It was Butch & his wife. He’s 80+ years old and we had seen him hiking early on, down south. Not sure if he had been planning to do the whole trail or not – who knows.

Made it to the Hiker’s Welcome Inn Hostel in Glencliff around 4:30, in time to pick our mail drops @ the PO. Had a bit of rain as we came in but nothing major.

We start our big climbs in the Whites tomorrow. Mt Moosilauke first. As we ended our hike today I saw a huge mountain looming in the distance, and I almost felt gleeful. A sudden inspiration and excitement. We’re in the Whites, in Hew Hampshire! We’ve made it so far! I suddenly felt like I could climb that first 3,000 ft in an instant. As we sit here at the hostel, though, I can feel anxiety starting to weigh on my mind. The weather said thunderstorms in a couple of days. I’m really worried about the weather. I pray it all goes OK.
