Journals From A 2003 Thru-Hike of the Appalachian Trail (by Loony)

Entry #131 – August 30, 2003

7:40 PM – What a night sleeping on the floor @ the Hut. Woke around 10:30 to a crazy ruckus of mice & squirrels & God-knows-what else. All night then we heard them chewing & running & clambering all over the kitchen. It was rowdier than even any shelter I remember.

Left around 8 & headed down to the highway where we got a ride into Lincoln. We had breakfast @ McDonald’s, bought some new wool mittens, went to the library & got groceries. We may have gone overboard on the food, as I must have 10 lbs of chocolate alone.

After town we did a near 3,000′ climb & we’re now camped up on the Franconia Ridge Trail. It is SO cold. Last time I looked @ the thermometer it said 40, and that’s not counting the wind. It’s going to be damn cold tonight. Hopefully it won’t be this bad for the rest of our trip.
