Journals From A 2003 Thru-Hike of the Appalachian Trail (by Loony)

Entry #147 – September 20, 2003

7:50 PM – Did the 7 miles to the highway to get into Stratton. There were 4 of us trying to get a ride & no one was stopping. While we were waiting, Martha Graham got dropped off. She’d been in the night before. Andy yelled to her that the Packers suck, since she’s from WI, and we got a full moon from across the highway. She cracked us up. I started to think this might be an interesting trip into town!

Finally a lady came along & picked up us four – me, Andy, Loser, & Jimmy. Once in town we ate with Loser, Sherpa, Kung Fu & Vic. Andy had a wolf burger – as if a quarter lb or third or whatever wasn’t enough it also had sausage & bacon on it – yikes!! It was there that Kung Fu let us know that he had rented a cabin across the street & we were welcome to sleep on the floor for $5 each. Yippee! The place was cool – kitchen, with everything, TV, couches, bathroom & shower!! It was big enough that it fit me, Andy, Loser, Sherpa, Loaf, LeChef & Wolverine comfortably. Glad we got to stay cause the rain started that night – side effects from the hurricane, I guess. Also we all went to the bar for karaoke night, ha, Ha!! It was quite a riot. Lots of people sang. Andy did too & sounded pretty good! He was quite popular, ha, Ha! So, most of us had quite a few beers & we didn’t get to sleep ’til one or so. Therefore we didn’t make it out too early, but were hiking by 9:30 or 10. Unfortunately we got poured on all morning and were soaked. Luckily, it wasn’t too cold – of course, we probably got wetter than if it had been cold, cause it was too warm to wear our rain jackets. It was extremely miserable nevertheless. On a good note, we climbed Bigelow Mtn today – our last big mountain until Katahdin. Only 177 miles to go. Can’t wait to be done. Hope the weather’s better tomorrow.
