Journals From A 2003 Thru-Hike of the Appalachian Trail (by Loony)
Entry #153 – September 27, 2003
6:30 PM – Happy birthday, Dad! We kind of had our own celebration out here in the “wilderness.” Sherpa’s family did trail magic & it was awesome. Hot dogs, hamburgers, pop, beer, chips, fruit, vegetables, & all kinds of bakery treats. We were so hungry when we got there at 10. It was like a miracle – SO good. After that we forded the West Branch of Pleasant River. Had to take our shoes off to wade across. Wasn’t deep, just wide & cold. After that we did just 5 more miles up to the Carl A. Newhall Lean-to. It was only about 2:00, but we were the first ones here. Since we were guaranteed a spot & the weather said rain tonight, we decided to stay. Morph, Moonshadow, Geo, Lumberjack, Chemo, Sherpa, & Kung Fu showed up, too. Of course it hasn’t rained yet, but at least if it rains tonight we won’t be in a wet tent.
Everyone is so ready to be done. It’s frustrating when we don’t make our miles, like today. Like the Trail will never let us finish. It is strange how trapped I feel out here. You’d think it would be completely the opposite. But we are always a slave to this damn Trail, with no way to get anywhere except our feet.
78.6 to go.
