Journals From A 2003 Thru-Hike of the Appalachian Trail (by Loony)
Entry #157 – October 1, 2003
3:50 PM – Happy Birthday, Elle! Wow – I’ve really missed so much being gone for 6 months.
But – we’re OUT! Out of the 100 Mile Wilderness and snuggled up almost at the foot of Katahdin! Woke up early (thanks to Morph & Moonshadow for getting us on the up-before-dawn schedule!) around 5:30. It was a very cold night, but we managed to drag ourselves out of our bags & the tent in the pre-dawn darkness. Enjoyed the last of our cereal & some tea while catching glimpses of a red sunrise over the stream and through the trees. After that, we were actually the first of probably 10 or so others to hit the Trail – at 7:00 AM. It was still cold, of course. Left in our jackets and mittens. Thought we might see a moose being so early, but no such luck. Had a nice easy hike and made great time. Our last 15 mile day!
When we got to the next shelter, had a cool surprise. Teflon, Slug, Tunnel Vision, & Bull were all there with a fire going, taking the day off. They had decided to skip part of the 100 Mile Wilderness (they have a car to be able to jump around) and had a bunch of extra food. They unloaded all kinds of good stuff on us – Snickers, Milky Ways, Starbursts, etc. The chocolate was much needed & appreciated! Talked for awhile & then moved on. 3 miles to Abol Bridge & the store!
Got to the sign marking the north end of the 100 Mile Wilderness and breathed a sigh of relief. We had arrived! Went to the store and snacked of course. Picked up some more food for the next couple of days, too. We’re camped across the road from the store. 15 miles from the end – the very end.
