Journals From A 2003 Thru-Hike of the Appalachian Trail (by Loony)
Entry #158 – October 2, 2003
7:15 PM – Had a great night at the campsite with everyone – Morph, Moonshadow, Sherpa, Geo, Chemo, Slow-Ride, Froggie Pete, & Right-On. We had some beer & a fire & a ton of junk food, of course.
Today we slept in – maybe until 7 or so, hah! Hung around at the site more & down at the store, too. Had a beautiful view of Katahdin from Abol Bridge in the morning sun. Didn’t leave the store until maybe 9 or so. Were kind of hoping Loser would show up since we hadn’t seen him since our river crossing escapade & were really starting to get worried.
Had a lazy day of hiking, then, really. Only 10 miles. Stopped in at Daicey Pond Campground for lunch. After that it was only 2.5 miles to Katahdin Stream Campground. It really hit me, then, that this was like our last bit of Trail. Our last piece of real Trail before the mountain. Took our time & got to Katahdin Stream where we saw all kinds of familiar faces. We hung out for awhile in the cold & talked & ate. Started drizzling not too long ago – kind of a sleet, really, and now we’re in the tent listening to that familiar pitter-patter or rain on the top.
One more day. 5 miles up, 5 down, and it’s done. Not really sure that I’m excited. I’m feeling a bit of anxiety about the climb. I’m just waiting for the relief, the weight of the Trail to lift off my shoulders, float away, & leave nothing but pleasant memories to ponder as I sit in a big armchair somewhere by a fire, sipping hot coffee and looking out the window.
