Backpackers can't survive on trail mix alone.
Hiking 15 mile days requires a hot tasty meal, and getting moving
on a frosty morning is always easier with hot coffee in your belly.
Starting a campfire, however, is not always practical, courteous,
or even allowed (due to restrictions.) Most hikers opt to bring
a small, reliable, lightweight backpacking stove. Backpacking stoves
